Student juried art exhibition opening at FAU

The 2009 Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition at Florida Atlantic University will open with a public reception and award presentation on Friday, March 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ritter Art Gallery on the FAU Boca Raton campus.
The exhibition presents some 50 works of art in all media selected from more than 200 submissions. FAU students can submit up to three works each and the juror, who is different every year, has complete autonomy in selections.
Three cash awards of $100 each are given, also at the discretion of the juror. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public, and the exhibition will remain on view through Saturday, April 4.
The juror for this year's exhibition is visiting artist, Deborah Aschheim, a California-based sculptor and multi-media artist. Read more on Boca Raton News

American photographer Eudora Welty once said that a good photograph stops a moment from “running away.” The 45 photographs now on display in the “Focus on Photography: Works from 1950 to Today” exhibition at the Hood Museum of Art more than meet that standard, giving viewers a cross-sectional look at events and people from the past 60 years.

The Hood has amassed 2,000 photographs and photo-based works over the last decade for use in its permanent collection.

In anticipation of a major survey exhibition opening in September 2009, “Modern and Contemporary Art at Dartmouth,” curator Emily Burke said she decided to put together a sampling of post-1950 photography to offer insight into the diversity, as well as the commonalities, of contemporary photography. John Updike pondered death in new poem

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. writer John Updike's death made headlines this week, but in a poem due to be published later this year he mused about his "overdue demise" being received with "a shrug and tearless eyes."

The three stanza poem, "Requiem," will be published in Updike's forthcoming collection "Endpoint" in September, said Nicholas Latimer, director of publicity at Alfred A. Knopf, a unit of Random House.

Updike, a leading writer of his generation who chronicled the drama of small-town American life with flowing and vivid prose, wit and a frank eye for sex, died on Tuesday of lung cancer. He was 76. The poem reads:

It came to me the other day:
Were I to die, no one would say,
'Oh, what a shame! So young, so full
Of promise - depths unplumbable!
Instead, a shrug and tearless eyes
Will greet my overdue demise;
The wide response will be, I know,
'I thought he died a while ago.'
For life's a shabby subterfuge,
And death is real, and dark, and huge.
The shock of it will register
Nowhere but where it will occur.

Latimer said the publisher had received the collection, including "Requiem," just a few weeks ago.

The prolific Pulitzer Prize-winning author died in a hospice in Massachusetts, the state where he lived for more than half a century.

Latimer said two more books by Updike will also be published this year -- "My Father's Tears and Other Stories" in June and "The Maple Stories" in August.

The Cross-cultural Exhibition "Creative Wall Voices" is now online and will stay, from October 15th to November 15th 2008.
52 artworks of 18 artists from 13 countries are being exhibited.

The "Creative Wall voices" goals are: To promote cultural diversity and cultural exchange. To support mass production, and mutual understanding.
Congratulations to all these artists, who accepted to join this great initiative. They have to be pround of being part of this event, when we know what exchange and mutual understand mean to our world today.

The Republic of Molossia is a micronation located near Dayton Nevada. Founded by Kevin Baugh
HISTORY
Molossia claims foundation on May 26, 1977, under the name Grand Republic of Vuldstein, with James Spielman as King James I, and Kevin Baugh as Prime Minister. On September 3, 1999, Baugh declared the Republic of Molossia, with himself as president.
In 2000 Molossia hosted the first Intermicronational Olympic Games, timed to the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. The same year, Molossia adopted the Norton Day (January 8) as an international holiday for small nations, honoring Joshua A. Norton (c.1819-1880), self-proclaimed “Emperor of these United States”. In 2001 Molossia hosted the first Intermicronational World Exposition, showcasing micronations from the world over. In August 2003 Molossia purchased land in Northern California, claiming it as a colony called Farfalla.

FOREIGN RELATIONS:
Molossia recognizes several other micronations, with numerous treaties enacted to this end. In May and June of 2008, Molossia will hold a summit of micronational leaders from around the world.
Molossia asserts it was one of the first countries to recognize the Republic of Kosovo, one day after it was declared on February 18, 2008, with Baugh sending an official letter to the newly formed government.
